Album Review: Johanna Telander – Tales of Les Dames Blanches

We all know stories that have been passed down for generations, but we rarely stop to ask what might have been left out. In Tales of Les Dames Blanches, Johanna Telander takes some of the world’s most familiar female ghost legends and gives them a fresh perspective. Instead of concentrating on the fear and mystery surrounding these women, the Finnish-American composer explores the lives behind the stories, turning a collection of supernatural tales into a musical exploration of womanhood, history, and human suffering.

The idea comes to life through twelve principal characters inspired by the legendary Ladies in White. From France’s La Dame Blanche de Puymartin to the White Lady of Balete Drive in the Philippines and Finland’s Valkoinen Rouva, the project draws on folklore from different parts of the world. Each character contributes to a wider story about the many sides of womanhood, with archetypes ranging from maidens and mothers to witches and crones.

One of the most appealing things about the project is its musical variety. Telander combines classical, folk, and ethereal pop-jazz elements to create a sound that feels mysterious and theatrical. The arrangements help establish the world of the story, bringing to mind old castles, ancient forests, and windswept shores. There is a sense of fantasy running through the music, but the emotional ideas behind the characters keep the project connected to real human experiences.

The album also brings together a notable group of vocal performers, including Militia Vox, Natalie Toro, Felicia Curry, and Telander herself. With twelve principal roles to explore, the different voices help give the story its depth and character. The theatrical approach allows the project to move beyond a conventional album format, with each performer contributing to a larger narrative.

For me, the most interesting part of Tales of Les Dames Blanches is the way it encourages us to look at these women differently. Ghost stories often focus on how a person died or why their spirit supposedly remains among the living. The life that came before can easily be forgotten. Telander turns that familiar approach around by asking listeners to consider the women themselves, including the hardships and injustices that may have shaped their stories.

There is something particularly meaningful about that idea. A legend can survive for hundreds of years while the person at its centre becomes little more than a name or a frightening image. By giving these characters their own voices, Telander reminds us that the stories we inherit are not always the complete picture. Her approach also brings the album’s themes into the present, where questions about women’s experiences, identity, and the way history remembers them remain important.

Telander, whose previous work includes Kalevala the Musical, clearly has a strong interest in combining music with storytelling. This project gives her another opportunity to explore that passion, using folklore as the foundation for something imaginative and emotionally engaging.

Tales of Les Dames Blanches offers a fresh take on familiar legends, bringing together theatrical music and stories that encourage deeper reflection. Rather than leaving listeners with only the mystery of the women in white, Johanna Telander asks us to think about who they were and what their stories might mean. It is a thoughtful concept that reminds us there is often much more to a legend than the version that has survived.
