The legal feud between Jay-Z and attorney Tony Buzbee has reached new heights, as Jay-Z’s legal team has filed a motion to sanction Buzbee in response to what they describe as a “false and frivolous lawsuit.”
At the heart of the case are allegations made by a Jane Doe, who claims she was sexually assaulted by Jay-Z and Diddy at the 2000 MTV VMAs after-party when she was just 13 years old. However, following an NBC News interview, Jane Doe admitted to “mistakes” in her initial filing but maintained the broader accusations. Jay-Z’s attorney, Alex Spiro, is now using these revelations to cast doubt on the lawsuit’s credibility and question the handling of the case by Buzbee.
Jay-Z’s legal team pointed to discrepancies in Jane Doe’s statements, including details about the location of the alleged assault, which didn’t align with known facts, such as Jay-Z’s absence from the described “large white residence with a gated U-shaped driveway.” The motion also raised doubts about the credibility of Jane Doe’s claim regarding her father’s alleged journey to pick her up, with the father reportedly denying any recollection of such an event.
Spiro’s team further asserts that Buzbee should have amended or withdrawn the lawsuit after Jane Doe’s NBC interview, claiming that this failure undermines the case’s credibility. As a result, they are seeking sanctions against Buzbee for proceeding with what they consider an invalid claim.
In response, Buzbee dismissed the motion as a “tactic of intimidation,” accusing Spiro and his team of using “frantic filings” to bully and intimidate. He further stated, “With each frantic filing, Mr. Spiro’s team reeks of desperation. Mr. Spiro and his team think the laws and rules don’t apply to them. They are flat wrong. They also think they can bully or intimidate counsel by filing meritless and frivolous pleadings full of lies and half-truths… We won’t be bullied or intimidated, ever.”
The case continues to unfold as both sides prepare for further legal battles.
