    Exclusive Interview With Michael Waters

Michael Waters is quickly establishing himself as a songwriter with a remarkable gift for blending emotional depth, cinematic storytelling, and unforgettable melodies. Since making songwriting his top priority in 2025, he has enjoyed an impressive run of international chart success, earning recognition for creating music that resonates far beyond fleeting trends. His latest release, Requiem for Earth, offers a refreshing perspective on environmental awareness, presenting the planet not as a political cause to defend, but as a loved one deserving of care, compassion, and protection.

In this exclusive interview with Spinex Music, Michael opens up about the inspiration behind the song, his unique creative process, the emotional themes that shape his music, and why he believes meaningful songwriting still has an important place in today’s music landscape.

Congratulations on the release of *Requiem for Earth*! Rather than writing a traditional environmental protest song, you chose to write a love song to the planet. What inspired that unique perspective, and what message were you hoping listeners would take away?

The pivotal moment for we was the realization that I was feeling for the planet what I feel for any suffering loved one. And we tend to protect those we love. It’s the sense of loving protection – and the action it can impel – not angry protest that I wanted to elicit.

You describe the Earth almost as someone we love who is suffering. That’s a powerful metaphor. How did that idea influence both the lyrics and the emotional journey of the song?

The central counterpoint or poignant dynamic of the song is between recognition of the loveliness of our one and only home and its fragility vulnerability. This provides both the lyrical structure and the emotional “yes, but” oscillation of the song.

*Requiem for Earth* balances beauty with heartbreak, celebrating nature while acknowledging its fragility. Was there a particular moment, place, or personal experience that inspired you to write this song?

Not one particular moment, just an incessant series of moments. Some of the most powerful ones were also the smallest scale ones – such as walking through a beautiful country park and suddenly encountering an ugly fly tip. The outrage still didn’t quite overpower the sadness.

One of the song’s central ideas is that “people protect what they love.” Do you believe music has the power to inspire environmental awareness in ways that speeches, campaigns, or statistics often cannot?

Undoubtedly, but I’m not sure that protest songs always do, often because protesting so often seems like an impotent alternative to effective action – or even a distracting alternative to effortful action. It hardly needs pointing out that music can work on the head, heart and body all at the same time in a way that other ways of inspiring environmental awareness can’t.

You only began prioritizing songwriting in 2025, yet you’ve already achieved international chart success. How has that remarkable journey shaped your confidence and vision as a songwriter?

I didn’t start composing in 2025 but it’s when I decided to make it a top priority. Having several global hits one after another in the space of a few months has obviously been fabulous, affirming and encouraging, and for others to ask me “what’s next?” and say “I hope you’re going to keep releasing” has certainly been motivating. Getting high praise for my own vocals has made me reconsider my decision not to perform publicly. We’ll see.

Your music blends thoughtful storytelling with unforgettable melodies. When writing a song, which comes first for you: the emotional message, the lyrics, or the melody, and how do you bring them together into a finished piece?

All elements nearly always come together and at once. It rarely takes me longer than ten minutes to create (or give birth to) a song. There may be some tweaking afterwards and I have very different versions of some songs, but that’s because options present themselves in an almost subconscious way.

Requiem for Earth feels cinematic and deeply immersive. How important was the production in bringing the emotional weight of the song to life, and what atmosphere were you hoping to create for listeners?

I think both those adjectives apply and both are fundamental to the mood and emotional power of Requiem for Earth. I was hoping that listeners would somehow hold a mix of emotions at one time – muted and precarious delight, sadness, a touch of outrage, yearning, fearful concern and profound love.

Looking at today’s music industry, where shorter, trend-driven songs often dominate, how important is it for you to continue creating music with lasting emotional depth and meaningful storytelling?

Incredibly important. Some of my songs are pure breeziness, but others are deeply and meaningfully emotional and often focused on key relationship matters. I’ll risk it to say that they are songs for “grown-ups” and some could easily figure in relationship counseling sessions.

Every songwriter hopes their music leaves a lasting impact. Years from now, what would it mean to you if *Requiem for Earth* became a song people associate with protecting our planet and inspiring future generations?

I’d be truly honored and moved. Doing service in this world is, for me, an obligation and and a privilege.
I think I can promise (and I really hope this doesn’t sound arrogant) more highly melodic and emotionally meaningful songs as well as some pure fun pop ones.
My next release in a month or so will be an elctro-acoustic track called We Are Much Better People Now. Those who’ve heard it love it, so fingers crossed.

Finally, what’s next for Michael Waters after *Requiem for Earth? Can fans expect more music that explores powerful human stories, and what message would you like to share with everyone supporting your journey?

The message? “The song is the thing”. Songs are in some ways more fundamental than performers and have an existence outside of both performers and playlists – which is why I prefer “song” to “track”. What I hope anyone who listens to my songs senses is that I have put out the best productions I can, and it’s these not me I want the world to know and enjoy.
