Nashville-based artist Gabrielle Vaughn has released her emotionally charged new single, “SAME DNA,” now available on all digital streaming platforms.
Never one to shy away from vulnerability, Vaughn delivers a fierce and deeply personal performance on this track, tackling the heartbreak of watching a loved one battle addiction — a struggle she knows all too well.
“This is the hardest song I’ve ever had to write — and the hardest to let go of,” Vaughn shares. “It was born from the fractures in my relationship with my dad, who’s struggled with alcohol addiction for most of my life. I love him deeply, and it hasn’t been easy to witness his battle. If you’ve ever dealt with something similar in your own family, this song is for you.”
With its haunting synths and cinematic atmosphere, “SAME DNA” pulls listeners straight into Vaughn’s emotional world. Her voice — soulful, raw, and unflinching — cuts through the layered production, blending pop, rock, and alt elements with striking authenticity. The lyrics hit hard, especially in the devastating hook:
“Why don’t you twist the knife a little harder, push my head under the water,
make me feel like this was all my fault,
hurts twice as much ‘cause I’m your daughter,
remind you too much of my mother.”
“SAME DNA” isn’t just a song — it’s a lifeline. It’s catharsis for Vaughn, and comfort for anyone who’s ever felt trapped in the emotional wake of someone else’s addiction. “You are not your family’s mistakes. You are still enough. You always were,” Vaughn says — a message as brave as it is beautiful.
