Sheldon Mashugana is on a mission to bring laughter to everyday life through slapstick comedy, music, and entertaining characters. Originally created as a comedic idea during a radio show in Chicago in 1976, Sheldon eventually developed into a full-fledged alter ego, complete with his signature hairpiece, glasses, red shirt, distinctive voice, and memorable laugh. After returning to entertainment through an appearance on the television series Dallas in 2011, Sheldon Mashugana became another way for him to share his love of comedy with audiences.

With a collection of 18 slapstick comedy films on YouTube and more than 600 film festival awards earned by his work, Sheldon draws inspiration from comedy legends such as The Three Stooges, Mel Brooks, Jerry Lewis, and Marty Feldman. His approach combines physical humour, playful storytelling, and an appreciation for the absurd, all with one clear goal: to help people relax, forget their worries, and find something to laugh about.

His single “It’s Turkey Day” brings that spirit to music through a humorous Thanksgiving story about Sheldon and Crystal chasing a turkey, with food, football, silly jokes, and plenty of holiday chaos. Created in collaboration with singer Crystal Carr, the upbeat track combines her melodic vocals and musical ideas with Sheldon’s distinctive comedic delivery. The song reflects his desire to offer listeners something lighthearted at a time when everyday life can feel stressful and overwhelming.

Looking ahead, Sheldon is continuing to explore music, television, and film, including another holiday song with Crystal and three motion picture projects he hopes to bring to the screen. In this interview with Spinex Music, Sheldon Mashugana discusses the origins of his comedic alter ego, the making of “It’s Turkey Day,” his collaboration with Crystal Carr, and his plans to spread more laughter through future entertainment projects.

To begin, could you tell us about yourself and how you first got into entertainment? How did Sheldon Mashugana develop as your comedic alter ego, and what inspired you to create this character?

The character originally came from a radio show on the Loop in Chicago back in 1976. It was an April Fools’ Day job bit called Sheldon Mashugana in Little Brown Things That Float in the Water. I was messing with that for years, and a friend of mine and I always called ourselves Sheldon.

After I started to become more popular as an actor in Dallas, I decided to create Sheldon as a real person. The hairpiece, the glasses (Where’s Waldo?), the red shirt, but then the voice, I had to play with it, and then the laugh. That was the one that made the character.

I started back in 1979 at Second City Chicago as a joke, then quit. Then, in 2011, my wife asked me to be an extra in the TV show reboot, Dallas. Then I got hooked.

You have built a collection of 18 slapstick comedy films on YouTube. How has making comedy videos shaped your approach to entertaining people, and what made you want to bring that same humour into music?

I have always been a slapstick fan: The Stooges, Mel Brooks, Jerry Lewis. So most of my shorts pertain to my past or something I liked. Like a record, Have a Jewish Xmas, or a Marty Feldman short that nobody remembers.

I have over 600 film festival awards for all these films on FilmFreeway and a few other film festivals. Even Surfin’ Bird, Sheldon sang and won several awards for, including the videos.

“It’s Turkey Day” tells the funny story of Sheldon and Crystal chasing a turkey on Thanksgiving, with a Dallas Cowboys game and plenty of silly jokes along the way. Where did this idea come from, and how did you turn it into a complete song?

I was taking a walk on Thanksgiving last year and decided to create the song on my walk. I had a manager, Chris Jones, who introduced me to Crystal Carr, and she loved the idea of making a few songs together.

The comedy is all Sheldon shtick, and fart jokes had to be put in there due to most Americans eating a lot of food that day. Both Crystal and I put the lyrics together to make it a great song about the day of Thanksgiving.

The single brings together your comedic delivery and Crystal Carr’s upbeat melodic vocals. How did the two of you first begin working together, and what do you think each person brings to the song that makes the combination work?

See above in number 3. Also, we recorded in Atlanta, GA, and mixed it in Dallas, Texas, with Justin Pierce Music and Crystal using the computer for the actual instruments. I added Sheldon to it for a fun time.

The production uses doubled-up lyrics to create a distinctive sound. How did you arrive at this recording approach, and did experimenting with the vocals lead to any unexpected or funny moments in the studio?

The funny moments were when I was playing with it as Crystal was recording in the studio. The guy who was recording it was laughing. As for the doubled sound, that idea was Crystal’s. She tried a few ways and liked it better that way.

Crystal Carr and Justin Pierce helped shape the music, with Justin also handling production and mixing. What was the creative process like between everyone involved, and how did you make sure the music supported the comedy without losing its catchy, upbeat feel?

The lyrics came first over a few months, then Crystal played with the music. She was not sure how to begin the song, so I just told her to start with “Gobble Gobble” and go from there.

She added all my lyrics and played with the other parts to make it sound good. Once she sang in the studio, I came in and added Sheldon to it.

Thanksgiving is a familiar holiday for many Americans, but turning it into a comedy song offers a different way to celebrate it. What does the holiday mean to you, and why did you feel it was the right subject for a song built around fun, food, and laughter?

Thanksgiving is a day to relax, eat a lot of food, and watch football. But then I wanted to add laughter to it, since the economy and the way of life these days are so negative. I just want people to have a way to have fun on the holiday.

You have said that Sheldon Mashugana is about making things feel nicer and happier in a world full of problems and stress. How important is that mission to you, and what do you hope someone going through a difficult day feels after watching or listening to your work?

It will turn a day into a relaxed and non-stress day.

You have upcoming television appearances scheduled in Santa Fe during October and November. How do these opportunities fit into your plans to grow Sheldon Mashugana beyond YouTube and music, and are there other areas of entertainment you would like to explore?

I have written three motion pictures, and the studio might fund one of them. The other two I’ll do after that. The TV show is a different thing for Sheldon or myself. However, I’ll have a lot of fun being the lead in it and helping them direct my comedy style.

Looking ahead, what else can audiences expect from Sheldon Mashugana? Are you planning more comedy songs, films, television projects, or collaborations with artists like Crystal, and what would you most like to achieve with the character in the coming years?

Crystal and I are making another holiday song, and as indicated in number 9 above, I have three motion pictures. I have a feeling that the TV show will be more than one season to keep me busy. There will be some live shows around the globe, to be determined.
